Tampa Bay holds a large resident population of bottlenose dolphins, which is why almost every operator here can promise sightings on most evening trips and actually deliver.
The choice is really about the boat. A big party boat is cheap and social. A six-passenger boat gets into shallow water the large ones cannot reach. Here is who runs what.
Dolphin and sunset cruises
Island Ferry runs small boats out of Tierra Verde, capped at six guests, which is how they get into the shallows and the mangrove channels the bigger operators skip.
Sunshine Scenic Tours works the other end of the scale from John's Pass, running the Royal Conquest pirate ship, the Dolphin Quest and the Shark Boat. If you have children, the pirate ship is the obvious call.
Getting to Shell Key
Shell Key is an undeveloped barrier island preserve just south of Pass-a-Grille. No shops, no facilities, which is exactly the point. Take water.
The Shell Key Shuttle runs from Merry Pier at Pass-a-Grille on a Coast Guard inspected boat, and it is the simplest way across. Kayak outfitters will also get you there under your own steam.
Private charters
For a group, a private boat often works out similar to buying individual tickets, and you choose where you go. Several operators run bespoke trips out to Egmont Key, Fort De Soto and the sandbars.
